Through these selected works, I intended to create/convey a sense of mystery or wonderment. Much of this came through the use of impossible things, for example, a floating island, or massive swords. Each piece in this exhibition shows something wondrous in some manner. One of the works was based on a photo I took while on a walk on the trails near my school. In that work, rather than showing something otherworldly, I tried to capture the sense of wonder I felt when seeing nature there. Most of these works were created using drawing materials on a sheet of paper, since that fit well with my idea of fantasy. Books are the main way that I, and I’m sure many other people encounter fantasy. Therefore, I aimed to make my drawings somewhat reminiscent of such books.
I used pencil and graphite sticks in two of the works, and white colored pencil in a third. A fourth piece I created using only ballpoint pens, in an effort to both try something new but also stick with something similar to what I had experience in. In the fifth work, I returned to materials that I had used in 10th grade, and cut the design out of colored paper. I chose to use these materials in each case because I had had prior experience using them, and I felt that I would be able to effectively express my ideas through them.
The shared materials through most of the works helps to link them together stylistically, in addition to the shared theme of fantasy. I decided on this arrangement of my pieces after trying out several options. I felt that this one was the most fitting, as it gave an equal sense of importance to each work, despite the size differences between them, while still emphasizing the more central works over the outliers.
